A shining example from the lives of scholars, in which they displayed the most remarkable instances, the truest proofs, and the clearest indications of their love for knowledge, their passion for it, and their dedication to acquiring and seeking it. These examples and proofs are numerous and diverse; I have selected among them those that pertain to the scholars’ relationship with books—their dedication to reading and teaching them, their efforts in acquiring them through purchase and copying, in wondrous situations and astonishing scenes. And no wonder!
